Read: James 1:22-27 Memorize: James 1:22-24 Pastor Josh September 17-23, 2015
You ever had your parent say things like, "Did you hear what I said", or "Listen to me when I'm talking to you" It's is important to be a hearer and listen to what God's word says, but what James is saying in verse 22 goes a step further. "Be a doer of the word and not hearers only..." In other words, what you read in God's word or what you hear taught in teen meeting, Sunday School and Church services, you also need to put it into practice in your daily lives. Do what the Bible says to do. Obey your parents, obey them that have the rule over you, love your enemies, do good to them that hate you, and the list could go on.
"For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass; For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was." Ever looked in a mirror and then a few minutes later looked at it again cause you could remember if you fixed that spot in your hair from the last time you looked in the mirror. James is saying when you read God's word and look into the mirror of the word it shows you what you look like. But if you do nothing about it you forget what you learned. In other words do you remember what Pastor preached about last Sunday morning?
James continues to say in the next verse that if you are a doer of the word, put into practice what you read and learn in God's word, you will be blessed. The best way to experience God's blessing in your life is to obey what He says and watch how He blesses your obedience.
The next verse James is describing how you can spot a phony "Christian". This is the person who says they are a christian but the way they talk reveals what is really in their heart. As the saying goes, "your walk talks and your talk talks, but your walk talks louder than your talk talks". Their is a difference in being a religious person and having a releationship with God. God want's to have a relationship with us, He wants us to get to know Him and who He is. We can't do that if we are not in His word. We can't do that if we just hear His word but don't put it into practice.
In the last verse James mentions two things that reflect pure religion. Helping others in need and being unspotted from the world. Or we could say, having a servants heart and not living like the world. James will dive more into this thought in the next chapter, as will we. Just remember, put into practice in your life what you hear and learn from God's word. Don't just hear it, but do it! Kind of sounds like a Nike commercial.
