Great Faith

It is striking how often our Lord is impressed by the faith of Gentiles and grieved by the lack of faith in the Jews, even the lack of faith of the disciples themselves. The miracle the centurion of Capernaum requested for the healing of his servant demonstrated great faith. He recognized that the authority of the Lord over all creation meant that he could simply command the sickness to depart the servant’s body without actually going to the servant’s location. He did not need to make a dramatic entrance or make physical contact. The Savior’s word of command was all the power necessary. Of this Roman army officer our Lord remarked, “Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.” Matthew 8:10
