Read: James 2:5-7                         Memorize:James 2:5                                       Pastor Josh                                            October 1-7, 2015

James starts verse 5 with a word, hearken, which basically means listen.  Every heard you parent say, "Listen to me when I'm talking to you."  Maybe you have been in class and heard what the teacher said but not really listened.  We all are guilty of this at times.  We hear what we want to hear and really listen to what we want too.  So, as James says, Listen up!  "Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith,..."  Do you know the Lord as your Savior?  This is who James is talking about, the poor of this world, sinners, but saved by grace or rich in faith.  "...and heirs of the kingdom which He hath promised to them that love Him?"  If you know the Lord you are an heir to the kingdom of God.  Has He not promised to take us to heaven to be with Him one day?  Do you love the Lord?  If so, this verse if talking about you.  How do you show love to the Lord?

"But ye have despised the poor.  Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?"  The word despised in this verse does not mean hate as much as it means to look down on, to sneer, to mock or laugh at.  This is something we would all have to say we have or are gulity of doing this.  God has made everyone special in their own way.  You ever been guilty of making fun of someone who looks different than you or maybe even acts a bit different?  But on the flip side of this, what about how others treat you.  Do you let how you are treated affect how you live for God?  If you know the Lord as your savior, you will be "persecuted" or laughed at for taking a stand and doing what's right.

Verse 7 "Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called."  What is the name by which we are called?  Christian!  Christian means little Christ.  Are you embarassed to be called a Christian in front of yor friends?  There's not too many sports stars, actors or actresses who stand up for God, these days.  TV is saturated with mockery and blaspheming God.  Which would God be more pleased with, someone who blasphemes or mocks Him, or someone who is not ashamed to be called a Christian?  What about you?  Will you stand up and be proud to be called a Christian, or will you join those who seek to make fun of God and others?
