Read: James 3:5-8 Memorize: James 3:8 Pastor Josh November 5-11, 2015
"Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!" In this verse James gives us a picture of how the tongue, even though it is small, can control everything about us. Ever been around someone who all they can talk about is themselves? The Bible calls that pride! There are many verses on pride, what does God call a prideful person in Proverbs 14:3?
"And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell." James also calls the tongue a fire, how fast does a fire spread? How fast does a rumor or gossip travel? A fire will consume anything in its path, and so will your tongue if you let it control you. There's a reason James picked a fire to picture the tongue. Your tongue can be the end of you, be careful what you say, especially in the heat of the moment.
"For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:" You ever seen a dog that has been to obedient school follow the commands of his master? Stay, sit, roll over, shake, beg, speak! These are common things we like to teach our pets. Animals can be trained to bend to our will, but notice what James says in verse 8.
"But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison." A poison slowly kills and so can the tongue. If James says that no man can tame his tongue than how do we get control over it? Just like we do anything else we struggle with in our lives, with God's help! Take a look at the list of verses and see what you can do, with God's help, to control your tongue.
