Thanksgiving has only been a national holiday since 1863 when Abraham Lincoln declared there to be a set day of Thanksgiving.  But Thanksgiving was first celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621.  Over the years there have been different traditions started like parades, family meals, and sporting events.  Even though we all have certain things we do during these holiday seasons, there is one thing I would ask you to do.  Take some time with your family and talk about the things you are most thankful for.

As you do this, remember who it is that has allowed and provided all the things you have.  Even in the Old Testament the Israelites had an offering of thanksgiving that they would offer to the Lord.  The sacrifice was offered by one who was compelled to offer thanks to God out of a joyful heart.  (Leviticus 7:11-15)

Paul reminds us in our passage that we can rejoice in the Lord always.  Rejoicing means to feel or show joy.  This is a special time of year to realy be joyful to the Lord for all He has done for us.  He sent His only son to die on a cross for our sins.  This is the biggest thing we can always be thankful to God for.

Some people have a hard time being joyful because they spend too much of their time worrying about things.  This is what Paul is talking about in this passage.  If we follow his example here we can have peace in our lives.  Bring your requests to God through prayer but don't forget to be thankful.  We don't really need a special time of the year set aside for thanksgiving to be thankful to God.  We can always be thankful at any time of the year.

The quote for this week is actually a song.

When I look around and see

The good things He does for me

I know I'm unworthy of them all

And His blessings He freely gives

I owe my life to Him

I've got so much to thank Him for

We'll I've got so much to thank Him for

So much to praise Him for

You see, He has been so good to me

When I think of what He's done

And where He's brought me from

I've got so much to thank Him for

Sometimes while on this way

I kneel and I stop and say

Lord, thank You for all You've done for me

And one day I'll reach Heaven's shore

Oh please let me kneel once more

I've got so much to thank You for

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!
